The objective of the present research was to determine the demographic characteristics of the population of dogs and cats domiciled in the southeastern sector of Bucaramanga, department of Santander (Colombia) in 2016-2017. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Through a survey of pet owners, information was obtained on the species, breed, sex, age, vaccinated and dewormed animal, type of food and reason for ownership. A total of 97.1% of the households had dogs or cats as pets. The average number of dogs and cats per household was 0.67 (227 dogs / 339 households) and 0.30 (102 cats / 339 households), respectively. The person: dog and person: cat ratios were 4.33 and 9.64, respectively. The main reason for dog or cat ownership was affective (92.1 and 98%, respectively). Likewise, there was a predominance of male pets over female pets.
